Definitely Lacking Something

For dinner I heated up yesterday's leftover fried rice and paired it
with a piece of broiled tilapia. I love making fish this way because
it's so ridiculously easy. You just rub it down with some oil, season
with salt and pepper and then toss it in the broiler for about 8
minutes. Super quick and super easy.

Sadly it cooks up so fast if you're not careful, dinner is ready
before you are. I was hoping to make some spinach to balance out the
meal, but the fish was ready before I even got around to washing the
spinach. Oh well, guess the spinach will have to wait until tomorrow.

Melissa and I have lunch with the boys

Today was the bi-weekly group lunch and although the weather wasn't
fantastic we headed down to Taylor's. I was sort of full from the
black and white cookie (and no I did not eat the whole thing), so I
went for the Cobb. It was a good choice, but still a bit too filling.

The black and white cookie

This weekend Melissa was in New York missing out on all the awesome
bay area weather. Sad for her but yay for me. You see her loss is my
gain, because if she hadn't gone to ny, I would not be the proud owner
of an authentic black and white cookie. She brought some minis too,
but first come first serve. Nom nom!

These are from William greenberg desserts and are super cakey
delicious. It had been a long time since I had one and have been
wanting to bake them, but wasn't sure if my end result was right. Now
I know what to aim for.

Sidenote: Melissa is the best.

The most delicious tomato of the season

Last night while I was at bi-rite the gal working the produce area
tipped me off to the best tomatoes of the season. Maybe even my life.
Seriously, the sweet/tart melt in your mouth delicious flavor was one
of the best things I've ever eaten. I ate some on a sesame bagel with
cream cheese, but I ate even more on their own. They're like candy. I
could eat these forever.

The secret to my successful fried rice

Is bacon.

I heat up the pan and toss cut up pieces of bacon (about a slice or
two, the fattier the better) and cook it so that it releases a bunch
of bacon grease. Next I toss in the garlic and chili peppers, then I
sauté in seasoned chicken pieces until they're no longer pink
(although most likely not cooked all the way thru) and add in a bag of
frozen veggies. Once everything in the pan is looking good I add in
leftover cold rice. Then some soy sauce, siracha, orange juice, and
spices until everything is just right.

It's actually a no-fail dish no matter what you stir into it, but the
key lies in the start. Cooking in bacon fat just makes it so much
better.

A new favorite snack

On a whim, I picked up a bag of Danielle brand sweet mango chips. I'm
glad I did. They are super crispy puffed out chips maxe from real
mangoes. In fact the only ingredients are fresh mangoes and palm oil.
They forgot to list one thing though: deliciousness. These chips are
full of them.

Sandwiches in bowls

I forgot to run the dishes last night which means there are no clean
plates left. Sure I could take one out of the dishwasher and wash it
by hand, but it was far easier to put this tritip, Jack cheese
sandwich with cilantro and horseradish into a bowl instead.

A little of the sweet, a little of the savory, and a lot of carbs

Breakfast this morning was a barely sesamed bagel with cream cheese,
white peach jam, and a sprinkling of fresh cracked black pepper. One
of my favorite things is jam and pepper. There's just something so
nice about the way the sweet and peppery mix together.

Detour at bob's

While taking samshrew and chris (and sushi) home, we decided to make a
slight detour to bob's donuts. I'd never been but had heard lots of
good things and since I am slowly becoming the late night donut queen
(it's not intentional honest) I wanted to try it. I'm glad we did.
When we got in they were just pulling out a fresh batch of chocolate
glazed cruellers. Light puffy crunchy goodness. Now to find out when
buttermilk donuts are fresh...

The missing 24 hours

Last night randall and I met karen and shin down at starbelly for dinner. There was a 30 minute wait so we went across the way to café flore for mojitos (it was so freaking hot out. when we got there the bartender was making some and they just looked refreshing, I just said, I want that. It turned out to be a good choice). Starbelly also turned out to be a good choice, they just opened and I’d heard their service was spotty, but they definitely had their act together last night. The food was pretty delicious, the drinks were great, and the scallops with corn puree was nomilicious.

However, I forgot to take a picture, mostly because it was crazy dark inside of starbelly (that was my only complaint, the atmosphere seemed all over the place). And i was going to draw it, but my finger and the iphone have yet to learn how to make good images. i think i'm going to try out one of them stylus dohickeys.

This morning, when I got up I had a piece of sourdough bread topped with white peach jam made by neighbor (remember the one who accidentally caused our basement to flood? She brought us this as a peace offering. It fully sufficed.

Later in the day, which was also still fucking hot (at least in our house especially in the bedroom where I spent the whole day cleaning out the closet), randall bbq’d up some burgers with jack cheese and cilantro on sourdough bread. We paired it with a few spears of asparagus.

Finally, for dinner samshrew and chris came over and we bbq’d some carne asada flavored tri-tip with rosemary potatoes and grilled summer squash.

I know, I’m phoning all this in. I am more or less taking a computer break for the weekend.
